The way to surgically treat a cataract is to remove all or part of the lens and replace it with an artificial lens. These artificial lenses are called IOLs or Intra-Ocular Lenses (ocular means ‘eye’).
Definitive treatment of cataracts requires cataract extraction and replacement with an artificial lens. These intraocular lenses (IOL's) come in a variety of strengths, and surgical management may often reduce or eliminate your need for glasses.
What Should I Know About Surgery?
Your doctor will explain your options, including your choices about the different IOL's available for implantation. We will provide you detailed instructions on your pre- and post-operative care and will follow your progress after surgery.

Can a Cataract Return?
A cataract cannot return because the lens has been removed in its entirety. Occasionally, some scar tissue may form behind the implant and require additional, painless outpatient laser treatment. In most cases, this procedure can be performed in our clinic, requiring just a few minutes if required.
Premium Lenses?
Conventional intraocular lenses are typically selected to optimize your distance vision. Most often, reading glasses are required to read fine print after cataract surgery. New IOL's are available which are designed to restore your near and distance vision, theoretically eliminating your need for reading glasses altogether. Three of these new lenses, called "Multifocal" or "Accomodative" lenses, are available (Alcon RestorTM, AMO RezoomTM, Eyeonics CrystalensTM). At Beyer Laser Center, our surgeons are experienced with the implantation of these lenses, and we can discuss these options with you if they are of interest.
Is Cataract Surgery Right for Me?
More than 98% of patients with otherwise healthy eyes see better after cataract surgery. But no surgery is completely risk free. Ask your doctor to explain anything you do not understand. There is no such thing as a "dumb" question when it comes to your health.
